SPACEWEATHER: Blue Auroras and Quiet Chance of Solar Flares

The Season of Blue Auroras

SPACEWEATHER.COM NEWS: 04/22/2026

‘TIS THE SEASON FOR BLUE AURORAS: Blue auroras are very rare. Even veteran aurora chasers with years of Arctic experience have seldom seen them. Yet there is a time of year when they become easier to find–and that time is now.

“Last night, a blue aurora appeared overhead,” reports Geir T. Birkeland Øye of Ørsta, Norway, less than 200 miles south of the Arctic Circle. “This is a sight we don’t often see.”

Auroras are almost always red or green–colors produced by oxygen during solar storms. Blue, on the other hand, is a sign of nitrogen. The color is produced by ionized nitrogen molecules (N2+) at the top of Earth’s atmosphere. The problem is, there are very few N2+ ions up there. The feeble blue they emit is practically invisible.

For blue auroras to reach naked-eye visibility, something must amplify the light. The amplification process is called “resonant scattering,” and it was definitely happening on April 21st.

During the display, the Arctic sun was only a short distance below the horizon, perfectly positioned to illuminate the “nitrogen zone.” Nitrogen ions floating 200 km above the ground absorbed and re-emitted high-altitude sunlight, transforming a faint blue (427.8 nm) emission into a visible, brilliant glow.

“At this time of year, astronomical darkness does not occur here; the sun remains higher than about -13°,” explains Øye. “This creates a seasonal window where the upper atmosphere remains sunlit while the ground-level sky is still dark enough for auroras to be visible. That combination is ideal for enhancing N2+ emissions through resonant scattering.”

New Sunspot 4420

QUIET WITH A CHANCE OF SOLAR FLARES: Solar activity remains low, but the quiet might be ending soon. A new sunspot 4420, developing in the sun’s northern hemisphere has an unstable ‘beta-gamma’ magnetic field that harbors energy for Earth-directed solar flares.

There are no significant coronal holes on the Earthside of the sun.

Mayan Calendar Time and Synchronicity

The trecena of Storm/CAUAC represents the power of Lightning that replenishes Nitrogen as it turns Element of Air into Living Water. The Time is ordered for a Renewal and Regeneration of Spirit.

12 Dog/OC is represented by the Dog Star, Sirius, called the “Sun of our Heart”. The Dog is a living demonstration of the Creator’s Unconditional Love. The Dog gathers souls to heaven across the Milky Way, “where the Dog ran”. Canis Major follows Orion. The Orion Nebula is the Star Nursery closest to Earth.

Tone 12 holds the Intention of Understanding. We conceive the Power of Love when we follow the Master’s Greatest Commandment. Love will guide the Way.

The “Tzolk’in Field Guide” is my gift to download that includes the Count of Days with the aspects for each Destiny Kin and highlights for a personal practice with each trecena. It’s designed as a companion for daily practice.

Visit the 13-Day Trecena Guide. to download a free copy. Volume 1 covers the first two seasons of the Tzolk’in, and Volume 2 covers the 3rd and 4th to the end of the Tzolk’in round.

Storm/CAUAC is the 1st trecena of the Second Season, found in Volume 1.

NOTE: Refer to Tone 1 for the Inspiration from the beginning.

Galactic Tone 12: Understanding. This number’s energy is a gift of great capability of retrospection. It is this ability that allows Twelve to connect disassociated parts into a (new) functioning whole. The energy of Twelve is that which presents a new piece of understood information or accumulated experience to be applied.

Dog/OC: Courageous, loyal and warm-hearted, very alert and valiant, people born of Dog are respected for their sense of justice and their protection. People born of the sun sign Dog are very sensual and know how to enjoy life. Playfulness and a good understanding of the basic human nature lead to prosperity for Dog. Dogs are good team players who love to travel and have a keen sense of their position in society. Dogs are ambitious and will take opportunities when they offer themselves, including infidelities. Dog persons share the nature of coyotes, spies, wolves and lawyers.

A GOOD DAY TO: Enjoy family and friends.

Cherokee, Wolf/KANA’TI: Wolf is symbolized by Sirius (Dog star) and Antares, one or the other always visible but never at the same time.  Wolf is our brother, shares our very roots.  All dogs are domesticated wolves, companionship and guidance.  Wolves are a connecting link between the worlds; ones who inspire loyalty, diplomacy and sense of humor with unlimited potential.  Wolf is the Day Sign of teachers, healers, pathfinders and transformers; sharp as obsidian, gentle as a lamb.

Sirius is called the “Sun of our Heart”. It rises to its pinnacle position in the Lion’s Gate (08/08), when Earth is aligned with the Central Sun of the Galaxy in the 23rd degree. The Seeds of Love we tend through the Summer are given an extra push before the Harvest Moon.
