THE SUN’S SURFACE IS WEIRDER THAN YOU THOUGHT: A giant telescope in Hawaii just saw something unprecedented on the sun. The surface of our star, it turns out, is covered with tiny ripples and whirlpools that previous telescopes could not see.

AIA (Atmospheric Imaging Assembly) is the camera on board the SDO satellite.
171Å (171 Angstroms) defines a microscopic measure of a wavelength of light.
The 171 filter captures Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) from super-heated plasma at 1 million degrees kelvin. It shows massive, glowing magnetic loops walking across the Sun like giant slinkies. Loops can be seen twisting, breaking, or glowing brightly when there’s a solar flare.
The SDO 171 Image is the Sun’s outer atmosphere (the Corona). The Corona (crown) is the flame, a thousands of times hotter, sitting above the Sun like a crown.

PROTONS ARE RAINING DOWN ON EARTH: Yesterday’s long-duration solar flare from sunspot 4492 accelerated a stream of energetic protons toward Earth. They are striking our atmosphere now. This is called a “solar radiation storm.” Current storm levels are minor (S1-class), which means the protons pose no significant threat to astronauts or air travelers.

Earth-orbiting satellites have just detected a M1.9-Class Solar Flare, 30-JUL-2026, at 17:00:00 UTC.
17:00.00 UTC is Noon, 12:00 p.m. CDT
Comparing the SUVI image with the current Sunspot image, the erruption appears to have originated from Sunspot 4482. Sunspots in the neighborhood of the brightest spot on the SUVI image reside in the “danger zone” for a geoeffective blast that would be aimed at Earth.
Time will tell when Spaceweather.com receives the detailed forecast. Details should be posted soon on Spaceweather.com.
The realtime gallery will also be posting the effects of multiple CME’s that were already on the way, destined to arrive, July 30-31, 2026

Earth-orbiting satellites have just detected a M3.2 class solar flare at 26-Jul-2026 at 15:28:00 UTC.
An R1 (minor) radio blackout is possible on the sunlit side of Earth.

It’s hard to say which “quiet” part of the Sun produced the eruption. The Sunspot number and details will be forthcoming from Spaceweather.com.

It’s been TOO LONG since I heard this song. You probably haven’t heard it on the radio unless you are a golden oldie. It was released by The Association on May 1, 1967 (12 MULUC) – an Offering of Divine Understanding from Above. It reminded me of the Breath of Life and Breath of Spirit.
Check out Joanna’s post offered “With Love, Hope, and Perseverance”. Thank you Joanna.

THE SUN IS FLATLINING: The sun’s X-ray output is flatlining today despite the presence of four significant sunspot groups. Not one of the sunspots is flaring. Is this the calm before the storm or genuine quiescence? It feels like quiescence. Our prediction: A quiet weekend.
The Sun doesn’t appear to be dead. Time will tell.

MINOR GEOMAGNETIC STORM IN PROGRESS: A minor G1-class geomagnetic storm is in progress on July 23rd as Earth moves through a high-speed (650 km/s) stream of solar wind. The gaseous material is flowing from a canyon-shaped hole in the sun’s atmosphere. High-latitude sky watchers might see auroras, especially in the southern hemisphere where winter darkness favors visibility.
AR4493 appeared and expanded from the Center of the Sun.

INCREASING CHANCE OF X-FLARES: New sunspot 4493 is emerging rapidly from the depths of the sun–and it has taken the shape of a gigantic ring. Maximilian-Vlad Teodorescu photographed the 100,000-km-wide structure from the Institute of Space Science in Romania:
