May 23, 2024 – Full Flower Moon

May is most notable for being the turning point in the year where temperatures rise and a vast variety of flowers come into full bloom, letting the world break out into a riot of color. As such, May’s full moon has come to be known as the Full Flower Moon. The Anishnaabe tribe also called it the Blossom Moon. In Northern America, you can expect to see flowers such as bluebells, sundrops, violets, and so on, as well as lush greenery to go with the blossoms. The Apache and Lakota peoples named May’s full moon the Green Leaves Moon, while the Mohawk tribe called it the Big Leaf Moon. But there is one specific plant that’s very important during the May season – and it is, in fact, not a flower.

This plant is corn, an important staple food for Northern American peoples. According to the Algonquin tribes, May’s full moon is the Corn Planting Moon. (SOURCE: MoonGiant.com)

The May 2023 Full Flower Moon is a supermoon, which means it appears up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than usual. The moon also goes through a penumbral lunar eclipse, which means it passes into the faint outer part of Earth’s shadow. A supermoon is also known as a perigean full moon, which is when the moon is full and at its closest point in its orbit around Earth.

Wesak Celebration

Buddha Purnima 2024: Buddha Purnima holds significant importance among Hindus, celebrated to commemorate the 2586th birth anniversary of Lord Buddha, also known as Mahatma Buddha. It is also referred to as Buddha Jayanti. Devotees of Gautam Buddha observe this day with immense enthusiasm and zeal worldwide. Buddha Purnima falls on the full moon day in the month of Vaishakh.

Wesak is celebrated by millions around the world, honoring “Christ Spirit” of all the Celestial Masters.  The sacred ceremony honors Light Poured Out from Above to all water on Earth, during the “high watermark of Spirit.” The event is recognized as a blessing of Spiritual Enlightenment.

A traditional prayer shared by many is The Great Invocation (included below), a call for the Living Christ to return to Earth. Many observe the event with an offering of flowers to living water.

The Full Flower Moon of May 2024 will see the moon pass in front of the red star Antares, the brightest star in Scorpius, the Scorpion. The Full Flower Moon of May 2024 rises on May 23. The official moment when the full moon reaches 100% fullness will occur on May 23 at 9:53 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time (1353 UTC), according to the U.S. Naval Observatory. Observers in the southeastern U.S., Central America, northeastern South America, the Caribbean, and parts of the western coast of Africa, will see the full moon will also pass in front of the red star Antares, (Alpha Scorpii) the brightest star in Scorpius, the Scorpion.
