Potential for the Unexpected

SPACEWEATHER.COM NEWS: 05/05/2026

SURPRISE GEOMAGNETIC STORM: A minor yet effective interplanetary shock wave hit Earth’s magnetic field on May 4th (1450 UTC), sparking G2-class (Moderate) geomagnetic storms and auroras. The source of the shock wave is uncertain, probably a stealthy CME that left the sun late last week. Minor G1-class storms are likely on May 5th as we transit the CME’s magnetized wake.

ARE WE OVERDUE FOR A SUPERFLARE? We’ve all heard of X-class solar flares–powerful explosions on the sun that pepper satellites with energetic particles and trigger great geomagnetic storms. They can be scary. But not as scary as a new category of solar flare being discussed by researchers: the “S-flare”–a solar superflare stronger than X10.

new paper published in the Journal of Geophysical Research suggests we may be overdue for one.

Right: An S-class solar flare (X45) on Nov. 4, 2003. [more]

During the current solar cycle (Solar Cycle 25), Earth has not yet experienced an S-flare. That’s a little unusual, according to researchers led by V.M. Velasco Herrera of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. The team looked at 50 years of data from Earth-orbiting satellites. Among 95,627 solar flares, they found 37 Earth-directed S-flares. Every solar cycle since the 1970s has produced one–except Solar Cycle 25.

There are some clues to when the next S-flare might happen. In the 50-year dataset, the researchers found two underlying rhythms: 1.7 years and 7 years, both linked to magneto-Rossby waves inside the sun. When both rhythms swing into their positive phase at the same time, the probability of an S-flare spikes.

According to those rhythms, we’re exiting a high-risk S-flare window now: mid-2025 through mid-2026. The next high-risk window opens in early 2027 and lasts about 6 months.

In May 2024, Europe’s Solar Orbiter detected two possible S-flares on the farside of the sun. Their intensity (with significant error bars) was X11.1 and X16.5. The sun fired the gun; we just happened to be standing behind the target.

Maybe next time. Stay tuned for updates as the 2027 window approaches.

SPACEWEATHER.COM ARCHIVES: Centennial Gleissberg Cycle

May 6, 2025: (Spaceweather.com) If you’ve been enjoying the auroras of Solar Cycle 25, we’ve got good news. The next few solar cycles could be even more intense–the result of a little-known phenomenon called the “Centennial Gleissberg Cycle.”

The Centennial Gleissberg Cycle is an approximately 80- to 100-year modulation of solar activity that appears to have entered a new, more intense phase around 2025-2026. A study published by Spaceweather.com confirms the Centennial Gleissberg Cycle has passed its minimum, ending a 15-year quiet phase and forecasting stronger solar cycles through mid-century.

Based on the centennial trend, researchers project that solar cycles 26, 27, and 28 will grow progressively stronger. Solar Cycle 26, peaking around 2036, could surpass the current cycle, while Solar Cycle 28, expected around 2055, may mark the Gleissberg maximum.

AIRGLOW DUNES (UPDATED): You may have heard of “aurora dunes” — a recently identified form of Northern Lights named after their resemblence to ripples in desert sand. Researchers led by Minna Palmroth (University of Helsinki) first explained them in a paper published only a few years ago.

Now, let us introduce you to “airglow dunes”:

Airglow and Milky Way at Paranal ESO observatory, Taken by Zdenek Bardon on April 17, 2026 @ ESO, Paranal, Chile

Zdenek Bardon took this picture from the European Southern Observatory in Paranal, Chile, on April 17th. “I was photographing the Milky Way and caught some rippling green airglow at the same time.”

The dunes are a “mesospheric bore,” a type of atmospheric gravity wave that springs up from Earth’s surface and gets caught in a thermal waveguide ~100 km high. Although auroras and airglow are formed in completely different ways (solar activity vs. terrestrial photochemistry) mesospheric bores can modulate them both.

Update: Space scientist Steven M. Smith of Boston University has a different interpretation of these dunes. “They are more likely to be ripples due to a Kelvin-Helmholtz instability,” he believes. “This kind of instability is caused by vertical shears in wind speed, which are common in the mesosphere. The effect is also seen on the bottom of sandy streams – the wave-like undulations in the sand on the bottom is due to the rapid change in velocity of the water.”

Smith prefers Kelvin-Helmholtz over bores in part because “a bore is much more extensive with the wave-fronts extending across the entire sky.”

METEORS FROM HALLEY’S COMET: Earth is entering a stream of debris from Halley’s Comet, source of the annual eta Aquariid meteor shower.

Forecasters expect the shower to peak on May 5th and 6th. Rates could be as high as 30 meteors per hour in the southern hemisphere, but only half that in the northern hemisphere. The best time to look is just before local sunrise when the constellation Aquarius is high in the sky.

NASA: To best view the Eta Aquarids, find an area well away from city lights or street lights. On a sleeping bag, blanket or lawn chair, lie flat on your back with your feet facing east and look up, taking in as much of the sky as possible.

Mayan Calendar Time and Synchronicity

12 Night/AKBAL holds the Intention of understanding (12); and AKBAL, the Light beyond the veil. Night/AKBAL represents the Creator’s realm – a place that’s Real where we ascend in our Dreams. Mystical experiences are possible on AKBAL as a Voice that speaks in our Dreams. AKBAL relates to a “dark night” of the unknown, when long lost dreams are brought to Light.

We are forever drawn to the Truth of the unlimited number of ways the Lord of All Creation can deliver the Light that transforms our boundaries of consciousness.

1 John 1:5 KJV
5 This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

The Truth stands on every scale of discernment, Figuratively, Literally, and Symbolically. The Spirit of the Creator is present in ALL Creation. The Light in us is the Water and the Blood that flows through the Heart. AKBAL is Time for a Heart to Heart in God’s language of Feelings. The Voice that breaks through the Darkness is spoken in our language. The Master’s Voice is recognizable through the Truth that is everything our Heart needed to hear to believe in our Dreams.

When we Consciously take in the Light of the Creator, our Spirit receives its “daily dose”. 10 minutes is the recommended daily allowance. We know the placebo effect is True. Take in the Light of God. If we can Dream it, God can complete the creation.

TRECENA OF ROAD/EB: HUMAN’S  ROAD TO DESTINY

The “Tzolk’in Field Guide” is my gift to download that includes the Count of Days with the aspects for each Destiny Kin and highlights for a personal practice with each trecena. It’s designed as a companion for daily practice.

It only takes 13 days to see how a Divine Intention set at the beginning, always end with the Truth of Answered Prayers. You only have to track your thoughts to stay on course. Often the matters on your mind follow the divine order of Time as the meaning of every Day.

Visit the 13-Day Trecena Guide. to download a free copy. Volume 1 covers the first two seasons of the Tzolk’in, and Volume 2 covers the 3rd and 4th seasons to the end of the Tzolk’in round.

Road/EB is the 2nd trecena of the 2nd Season of the Tzolk’in round, found in Volume 1. Road/EB is also known as Human. A cycle of a New Life is reaching maturity and Time is ordered for our Tree of Life to branch out to multiply to abundance. Day 1 of every cycle is a meaningful reference to remember the Intention you set from the beginning.

NOTE: Tone 1 reflects the 1st Light of Divine Inspiration as the “legend” of this chapter of Time. If you forget where you are, return to Tone 1 to see the “First Light” of Divine Inspiration for this climb of Faith.

12 Night/AKBAL (Cherokee, Hearth/O’YA) – Day 12 of 13 of the 1 Road/EB Trecena

Descriptions by Ian Xel Lungold, 12 Sun/AHAU, who’s wisdom and Tzolk’in calculator is preserved on MayanMajix.com

Galactic Tone 12: Understanding. This number’s energy is a gift of great capability of retrospection. It is this ability that allows Twelve to connect disassociated parts into a (new) functioning whole. The energy of Twelve is that which presents a new piece of understood information or accumulated experience to be applied.

Night/Akbal: Bringers of the Dawn. Dreamers who bring the new sun to clarify and illuminate the road of life. Thus the insecurities and doubts born of darkness of the sub-conscious mind are dispelled. These persons travel the Void… a place where nothing yet exists but all potential dwells, the womb of creation. From this void, Night persons bring forth new solutions and artistic inspiration. Night’s voyages of dreams build confidence and happiness with a sense of well being. If night does not bravely journey into the void they may find themselves wandering the darkness of self doubt and insecurity.

A GOOD DAY TO: Spend some Time contemplating the Stars.

Cherokee, Hearth/O’YA: Hearth’s symbol is the fire pit in the Center, velvet black as the night. The triangle in Orion. The M42 nebula (home of the Central race from the WingMakers) in the center of the triangle of Orion is the fire in the Hearth, also matching the Mayan. The Hearth is the Torchbearer who holds the light and warmth throughout the night. Belief is so strong that the surrounding elements become entrained to their rhythm and all resistance falls away. With respect and honor of intuition combined with knowledge this energy creates the magic of the center in this dimension.
