MAYAN CALENDAR DAYKEEPER’S JOURNAL
Tone 5 is a day of Empowerment. Five represents the center of the cube as the internal Force of intelligence, which organizes and manages materials and knowledge for application. 5 draws together the resources that are needed to empower a climb of Spiritual Growth.
Earth/CABAN is the symbol of Mother Earth and Movement. Mother Earth is the source of all wisdom and knowledge, and represents every resource Human would ever need to live our lives in a good way. Down to the finest details, Earth is a living illustration of the Creator’s Intention of Beauty and Abundance. Her way of Movement maintains the balance of Light and Dark. Through movement She creates Time and allows Human to mark the seasons and to navigate by the stars. Through Mother Earth, we can draw Knowledge of our Self and whole of the Universe.
The Cherokee and Aztec signs, the Heron and the Ollin are symbols of Movement. The Heron lives its life in the perpetual movement of migration. The Ollin simply means “Movement” and is the symbol that resides in the center of the familiar Aztec stone calendar, marking 20 stations of movement. Collectively, they reflect the Power of an object in motion. The Aztec Ollin guides the intention of purposeful movement, defining this as an auspicious day for the “active principle” and an unfortunate day for the “passive principle.” The Aztec refer to Ollin as the “day of the purified heart,” when we draw the Consciousness of what we are becoming. The Heron is likened to the Phoenix that rises from its own ashes to live again as a new creation. So are we rising again, transformed as something new.
5 Earth/CABAN is a sign to Move. The purpose of the Reed/BEN trecena is to draw the Light of the Creator. The Aztec define the trecena of Reed (Acatl) as a cycle of knowing the transitory nature of all we gain in life. It’s a reminder to view success and failure as matters of fate, and not a reflection of self-worth. We are given the courage to be seen just as we are rather than hiding in the shadows.
We can overlook our own failures by centering our lives around a Communion with the Creator. A Divine Source of Power will establish the means for Harmony and Right Relationships. As we remember to keep turning to our altar within, we will create the resource of momentum to draw upon to establish a Divine Rhythm and Pattern of Movement.
When I was first learning to play the piano, my biggest challenge was to keep playing after I made a mistake. My instinct was to stop and start again. My demand for perfection presented a major hurdle. Mistakes would be inevitable. Perfection wasn’t nearly as important as the recovery and moving on. One of my most embarrassing childhood experiences was the recital where I made a mistake, and unable to recover, walked away from the piano in the middle of my performance.
In a climb for new Spiritual Growth, we are honing new skills. We are going to make mistakes. We’ll run into situations where we forget, or don’t remember what should come next. When we listen to a song, we focus on the melody. When we keep playing, the melody is what the audience will continue to follow. We don’t stop listening over one missed note.
We can always know that the next right thing is to turn to the Light of the Creator and to keep moving forward. We accomplish the growth for a New Life as we become able to rise from the ashes of our mistakes.
This is an important Truth we would demonstrate in our home and family. When we concentrate on mistakes and errors of judgement, we hold people accountable and fixed on a moment in time. We can discourage others from moving on as they identify more with the mistake than the movement of their Intention.
Instead, we could guide others to turn to an internal resource that would help them to overcome future mistakes. We would offer the resources of recovery and momentum.
This is a day to express our Love for Mother Earth. She has kept moving on, recovering from the mistakes that Human has inflicted on her. She is faithful in her own recovery of her resources. Whatever is given to her is transformed for a new beginning. From our Human ashes, she creates the nourishment to grow something new. The water from our body and blood is returned to the rivers and streams and falls as rain from the sky.
Mother Earth holds the collective body of Humanity. Just as her atmosphere holds every Human breath, so does her body hold us forever in her arms. She is the One Source that perpetually holds the Family of Humanity together.
She raises us up with a demonstration of perpetual movement. She maintains a consistent rhythm of movement in darkness or light. Her perpetual movement always holds the promise of dawning to a new gift of Life, Light, and Happiness.
The resource of Power we can draw to our Spiritual Growth is the momentum of movement. We should never give up just because we’ve made a mistake, when we intended a melody of Love. Kneeling at an altar we will remember to humble ourselves, and to accept that mistakes and failures are inevitable. Turning to our Communion with the Creator, we can draw the Divine Power to keep going. We can see that our mistake doesn’t mean we must go back and start again. Instead, we can continue the song that is already in progress.
This ever-turning to the Creator’s Light is the One Song of the Uni-Verse. All the planets in the family of our solar system maintain an orbit that returns to the Sun. This is not a solo performance, but a chorus. Singing together, the mistakes will be lost in the melody that carries on.
To all my relations, may we see that our mistakes are immaterial to the beauty of a song we sing together. Within a chorus, the voices of others will help to carry the tune. May we see how maintaining the Harmony of family and home, we can rely on each other in the Creation of Beauty. When we forget, we will have others to help us remember. May we draw to ourselves the resource of Movement in an Intention to keep going. May we recognize Earth/CABAN as offering us the momentum to take action to do the next right thing. May we realize that resources of Wisdom and Knowledge are preserved for us by Mother Earth, to be applied again in a new way. May we hear the Heartbeat of our Mother, and return to her a gift of Love for all she has given, and all she has endured as our Mother. May we turn to her as the Altar of Beauty the Creator offered to us as a Gift of Wonders in every direction, and as the Arms that always carry us from the darkness to the Light.
GOD SIGHTINGS: When I was still raising my children, our church offered a practice to keep a daily journal of “God Sightings.” We each kept a small notebook where we would make note of our daily sightings that we shared over dinner. We were on the look-out for Blessings and Divine Synchronicity. Sometimes the sighting was as simple as an empty front-row parking space. Our lists became longer as time when on, and the sightings became more meaningful. I remember what a blessing it was when children returned home from school with the announcement, “Mom, I had a God Sighting today!” Every discovery was heralded as something miraculous and special. It set a tone and rhythm of movement to see the Beauty in life, and to attribute it all to a Source of Divinity. The practice drew Light from every member of the family. We all learned that when we seek the Beauty of Life on Mother Earth, we will always find what we are looking for.

5 Earth/CABAN (Cherokee, Heron/GUWI’SGUWI)
Galactic Tone 5: Empowerment. At the center of the cube we find Five. Five is an intelligent, organizing force which manages communications and materials, knowledge and application. Fives are natural net workers who gather what is needed. These persons can probe directly to the core of any situation making them excellent investigators.
Earth/Caban: Earth/Caban: Keeper of the garden of Earth. Profound synchronistic connections to Earth’s natural cycles and energies provide power of creations and memories of ancient wisdom. Earth persons help dispel bad intentions, habits and ideas. This makes them very good counselors and masters of all arts. Studious and intelligent, Earth persons endeavor to bring a flow of natural order to all aspects of life. Being connected to the dynamic forces of nature, Earth persons need much liberty to facilitate their expression of migration or the sending of long distance communications such as the whales, elephants, birds and many other creatures. Sometimes Earth’s delicate sensitivities are upset resulting in quakes of emotion even the display of volcanic temper.
Cherokee, Heron/GUWI’SGUWI: Sign of movement, of perpetual motion, recycling, regeneration; environmentalists fighting for the underdog. Heron is mentally alert, rational, yet opinionated; has a great faith in people and in the divine plan, holding the magic of ministry, medicine, marketing and matchmaking; healing abilities, especially with crystals; negotiation and mediation energy. Heron is symbolized by Deneb, located in the Northern Cross beside the Milky Way. “The Northern Cross is the Tree of Life, Beside the Milky Way River & Perched atop is Guwi’ sguwi, the Cherokee Heron Spirit Bird, comparable to the Egyptian Phoenix. One Myth has it that a Beautiful Young Maiden (the Heron Spirit Bird) fell from the Tree of Life in the Sky Vault, & Found no Place to Land on the Primordial Sea. Turtle came to the Surface of the Water & gave her a Place to Land. She nested & Laid her Cosmic Egg, From which came all Life on Earth.” (Cherokee Astrology: Animal, Medicine in the Stars, Raven Hall)
