STRONG X-CLASS SOLAR FLARE: The sun just produced a solar flare so strong, it took two sunspots to make it. The long-duration X1.1-class flare started on March 23rd around 0130 UT when both AR3615 and AR3615 erupted. NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the double blast:
This is called a “sympathetic solar flare.” Sympathetic flares are pairs of flares that occur almost simultaneously in widely-spaced sunspots, not by chance, but because of an unseen physical connection. Nearly-invisible magnetic loops in the sun’s corona connect some sunspots, allowing explosive instabilities to travel from one to the other. Some sympathetic flares are so much alike, they are considered to be twins.
This X-class event lasted for more than 5 hours, plenty of time to lift a CME out of the sun’s atmosphere. Confirmation awaits fresh data from SOHO coronagraphs; stay tuned.
SPIRALING COMET: Shapeshifting Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks has been a devil, a Romulan Warbird, a Millennium Falcon–and now it’s a lawn sprinkler. Michael Jaeger photographed the comet’s spiralling core from his backyard observatory in Martinsberg, Austria.
Jaeger assembled this movie from a series of pictures he took during the first week of March. Researchers believe that an “ice geyser” on the comet’s surface erupted Feb 29th, spewing a reflective plume of space-cold gas and dust into comet’s atmosphere. Jaeger’s animation shows that plume bent into a spiral shape by the spin of the comet’s core.
Comet 12P is currently located in the constellation Pisces, about 15 degrees above the western horizon after sunset for most observers in the northern hemisphere. Shining as brightly as a 5th magnitude star, it is a relatively easy target for backyard telescopes. Point your optics here and take a look!

July 25, 2023: (Spaceweather.com) Until a few days ago, Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks looked like a perfectly ordinary comet. Then, something on its surface exploded. Now it resembles “the fastest hunk of junk in the galaxy”–the Millennium Falcon.
The action began on July 20th when the comet abruptly brightened 100-fold. Astronomers watched as double plumes of debris streamed out of the comet’s core, sweeping back to form the Falcon shape. It is now shining with about the same brightness as an 11th magnitude star, making it an easy target for mid-sized backyard telescopes.
Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks is famous for exploding. Discovered in 1812 by Pons and discovered again in 1883 by Brooks, the bursty comet visits the inner solar system every 71 years. Since the 19th century at least seven significant outbursts have been observed.
