Solar Activity Over 24 Hours

THE SUN IS LITERALLY CRACKLING WITH FLARES: Seldom is the sun peppered with so many unstable sunspots. Today, there are at least 7 active regions capable of producing strong Earth-directed solar flares. This time-compressed movie shows the past 24 hours of explosions. All of these are strong M-class solar flares. An even stronger X-flare may be in the offing with radio blackouts and perhaps a CME.

AURORAS IN THE USA: Two more CMEs hit Earth on July 31st. Each impact was weak, but collectively they sparked a G1-class geomagnetic storm with auroras over Minnesota.

“My grandson is a huge space weather enthusiast and he was thrilled to watch the beautiful Northern Lights with me tonight,” says photographer Greg Ash of Ely, MN. While Ash’s family watched the display from Minnesota, photographic red auroras descended as far south as Nebraska.

Minor storming is expected to continue as Earth moves through the magnetized wake of these CMEs. Storm levels could jump to category G2 if another CME arrives on Aug. 1st, as expected. 

THINGS YOU SEE WHILE WAITING FOR AURORAS: Dan Bush wasn’t trying to photograph sprites. “I was out several times during the night of July 30th looking for auroras here in northern Missouri,” explains Bush. “Instead, I captured this bright jellyfish sprite.”

“I did photograph some pinkish aurora glows off and on throughout the night,” says Bush, “but sprites stole the show.”

While Bush was watching, a severe thunderstorm moved into Iowa, about 60 miles north of his home in Albany, Missouri, with sprites dancing across the cloudtops. “The display was intense, and included the largest and brightest sprite I had ever seen!” (Spaceweather.com News: July 31, 2024)

GEOMAGNETIC STORM WATCH (G2): Another CME is expected to hit Earth today, Aug. 1st. NOAA forecasters say it could spark a G1 or G2-class geomagnetic storm. During such storms, naked-eye auroras may be seen in northern-tier US states and central Europe.

Galactic Tone 7: Reflective. Seven stands as a mirror to divide light and dark and to reflect all that is and is not. Seven is associated with the source of creation and the flow of Divine Will. With a keen sense of ethics, Seven establishes purpose to current and future goals.

Crocodile/IMIX: Crocodile receives messages of primal creative force; simply the beginning of all things. Crocodiles who follow their hearts are seen as genius. There is no order to the primal messages, so Crocodile persons should direct their energies toward practical and cooperative efforts to bring productive results. Crocodiles have a strong nurturing energy and will work hard to provide security to family and friends. Being extremely territorial, Crocodiles must watch not to be over protective or too dominating. While in these states, Crocodiles are insecure, indecisive and emotionally volatile.
