YUKON MOON HALOS: On Feb. 28th, Joel Weatherly witnessed a once-in-a-lifetime display of ice halos around the Moon. “They appeared while I was guiding an aurora tour in the Yukon Territory for Classic Canadian Tours,” says Weatherly. “It was a truly exceptional display of atmospheric optics!”

SPACEWEATHER: Comets, Meteor Shower, and Auroras

Solar System Peak Activity in October

SPACEWEATHER.COM NEWS: 10/16/2025

MULTIPLE CMEs COULD SPARK AURORAS TONIGHT: All week long, active sunspot 4246 has been puffing CMEs toward Earth–at least three of them. Although the CMEs are individually faint and relatively slow, they could combine to cause a G2-class geomagnetic storm when they arrive on Oct. 16th. If such a storm materializes, auroras could descend into a dozen or more northern-tier US states.

SPACEWEATHER: Earth Exiting the Solar Wind; Shark Fin Aurora

The Light Making Waves

SPACEWEATHER.COM NEWS: 09/26/2025

SHARK’S FIN AURORA: On Sept. 22nd, photographer Karsten Berger of High Level, Alberta, captured a striking auroral shape: a razor-sharp green triangle jutting into the night like the fin of a shark. It may have been the crest of a breaking Kelvin-Helmholtz (K-H) wave:

SPACEWEATHER: Comet Tsuchinshan-Atlas, Auroras, and Effects of the Autumn Equinox

BBC Sky At Night: Autumn is on the way. Equinox occurs this weekend, marking the beginning of longer, darker nights

The Balance of Dark and Light

In 2024 the autumn equinox occurs on 22 September at 12:44pm (13:44 UTC), marking the day when we experience roughly the same amount of daytime and nighttime.
The equinox arrives at the same moment worldwide. The center of the Sun crosses the celestial equator, marking the Northern Hemisphere’s autumn equinox, and the vernal equinox in the Southern Hemisphere.

SPACEWEATHER.COM NEWS: 09/20/2024

AURORAS LOVE EQUINOXES: The northern autumnal equinox is only two days away. That’s good news for sky watchers because auroras love equinoxes.

SPACEWEATHER: Incoming CMEs, Crackling Sunspots, and Solar Flares

Solar Activity Over 24 Hours

SPACEWEATHER.COM NEWS: AUGUST 1, 2024

THE SUN IS LITERALLY CRACKLING WITH FLARES: Seldom is the sun peppered with so many unstable sunspots. Today, there are at least 7 active regions capable of producing strong Earth-directed solar flares. This time-compressed movie shows the past 24 hours of explosions. All of these are strong M-class solar flares. An even stronger X-flare may be in the offing with radio blackouts and perhaps a CME.

SPACEWEATHER: CME reaches Earth with another one scheduled to follow

Intense auroras! Taken by Sacha Layos on April 15, 2024 @ Fairbanks, AK (Spaceweather.com Realtime Image Gallery)

SPACEWEATHER.COM NEWS: APRIL 16, 2024

OVERDUE CME FINALLY ARRIVES: Arriving almost two days later than expected, a CME hit Earth’s magnetic field during the late hours of April 16th. The impact did not cause a geomagnetic storm, but it was strong enough to spark bright auroras around the Arctic Circle. Sacha Layos photographed the display from Fairbanks, Alaska.

SPACEWEATHER: Comet 12P Pons-Brooks Is Now a Nake-eye Object

Comet P12 Pons/Brooks Taken by MaryBeth Kiczenski on April 1, 2024 @ Eagle Harbor, MI (Source: Spaceweather.com Realtime Image Gallery) “I could see it naked eye once my eyes adjusted–but barely!” she says. “My camera had no trouble, though. This is a stack of 20 images, 30-seconds each.” Comet 12P is approaching the sun for a close encounter later this month. Its increasing brightness and proximity to the sun means it might be visible from the path of totality during the April 8th solar eclipse. Photos of a comet inside the Moon’s shadow are very rare! A tip for eclipse photographers: Take two cameras–one for the sun, and another for Comet 12P. You might be glad you did.

SPACEWEATHER.COM NEWS: APRIL 4, 2024

THE ‘DEVIL COMET’ IS NOW A NAKED-EYE OBJECT: Suddenly, amateur astronomers are seeing a naked-eye comet in the evening sky. It’s Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks, also known as the ‘devil comet‘. Waiting for next Monday’s solar eclipse in Mexico, Petr Horálek photographed the comet last night and found it much brighter than the last time he saw it.

SPACEWEATHER: Geomagnetic Storms, Dec 3, 2023

Aurora Australis, Taken by Mike White on December 2, 2023 @ Canterbury, New Zealand – SPACEWEATHER.COM Gallery 12-03-2023

SPACEWEATHER.COM NEWS: DEC 3, 2023

STRONG GEOMAGNETIC STORM: A Cannibal CME struck Earth’s magnetic field on Dec. 1st, sparking a strong G3-class geomagnetic storm with auroras in both hemispheres. “We witnessed an incredible show on the Canterbury coastline overlooking the Pacific Ocean,” reports Mike White from New Zealand. “The sound of waves crashing onto the beach and washing across the stony pebbles created the perfect soundtrack for these Southern Lights.”

6 Sun / AHAU – Spaceweather: Solar Flares and Auroras

KRTV – Viewer photos of the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) over Montana – February 26-27, 2023

SPACEWEATHER.COM – February 27, 2023

GEOMAGNETIC STORM WARNING: Strong G3-class geomagnetic storms are possible on Feb. 27th and 28th when another CME could strike Earth’s magnetic field–the second in as many days. The first CME, which arrived during the late hours of Feb. 26th, has already sparked multiple episodes of strong storming with widespread auroras in northern Europe and North America. A double blow could intensify the storm even more.
