VENUS – Greatest Western Elongation, Oct 23-24, 2023

Facts About Venus: Explore the Earth’s Sister Planet

Upcoming Events

October 24: Venus at greatest western elongation
On October 24, at 00:05 GMT (October 23, 8:05 p.m. EDT), Venus will be farthest from the Sun in the sky, shining at a magnitude of -4.4. At the moment of greatest elongation, Venus (positioned in the constellation Leo) will be 46.4° away from our star. It’s a perfect time to observe Venus, as the planet will have a chance to climb high in the sky before the sunlight hides it from view. Look for Venus above the eastern horizon during the predawn hours.

November 9: Moon near Venus
Conjunction time: 09:28 GMT (4:28 a.m. EST)
Conjunction distance: 1°06′
Close approach time: 10:23 GMT (5:23 a.m. EST)
Close approach distance: 0°53′
On November 9, the 16%-illuminated Moon will be near Venus (mag -4.4). The planet will rise in the morning, two hours before the Sun. Both objects will be visible to the naked eye and will shine in the constellation Virgo.

On the same day, observers from Europe, western Russia, Greenland, Africa, and Asia will see the Moon passing in front of Venus. The event is called lunar occultation and is only visible in specific locations.

On December 9, Venus (mag -4.2) will be shining next to the 12%-illuminated Moon. You will see the bright planet next to the thin lunar crescent early in the morning, before sunrise, in the constellation Virgo. No optics are necessary, although a pair of binoculars might be a good idea for a closer look at the duo.

Fun facts about Venus

Here are a few mind-blowing facts about the planet Venus.

  • Venus is the hottest planet in all of the Solar System.
  • Venus has rains of sulfuric acid that never reach the surface.
  • Venus spins on its axis in the opposite direction compared to most other planets.
  • In the Venusian atmosphere, winds blow at incredibly high speeds — up to 300 km/h (186 mph).
  • Venus has no moons or rings.
  • Venus has the longest day of any planet in the Solar System — it lasts about 243 Earth days.
  • A Venusian year (which is around 225 Earth days) is shorter than a Venusian day.
  • The atmospheric pressure on Venus is about 92 times greater than on the Earth. It is equivalent to the pressure experienced at depths of approximately 1 km (0.62 miles) in the Earth’s oceans.
  • Multiple spacecraft have successfully landed on Venus, but their operational lifetimes were very short due to the harsh conditions on the planet’s surface.

Visit the 13-Day Trecena Guide Page for the “Tzolk’in Field Guide: A Daily Practice for Personal Discernment.” My gift for the Tzolk’in round offers an overview for each 13-day trecena and the aspects of each day of the Tzolk’in round. The page also offers a link to resources for your own practice of counting the days to conceive your own discernment of the Meaning of Time.

NOTE: You can also look at dates from a different direction. What is the Destiny Kin number of your day sign’s 3rd tone? You may have overlooked a life-changing day. Use the Kin Calculator offered on the Daykeeper’s Resource Page for a date six years before or after. If you are just starting to count the days and don’t have a journal from the last round, when something major happens in your life you can look to see if there was a major event on that same date before. You can also look for Signs in the “distance of time” – the number of days between one 13 Eagle/MEN (Cherokee, Eagle/UWO’HATLI)Calculator linked on the resources page. Example – 33 days is a symbol of a day that you actualize the Truth from the beginning date.

Galactic Tone 8: Justice. Harmony and balance are the intent of Eight. Eights carefully weigh all evidence to reach a balance of justice. Eight is the power of organization demonstrated in the statement, “As above, so below”. From simplicity to infinity, the energy of Eight organizes all levels of creation. Some Eights are “Neat Freaks”.

Wisdom/CIB: The old ones. Wisdom of the ancients. Wisdom persons are aligned with the ancient memories that wait in the stone of temples and sacred sites all over the world. Wisdom people grow luck like a crop using a balance of prudence and tenacity. The tremendous inner strength of this sign, enables silent introspection to discover areas of oneself that contain wisdom more valuable than any trove of archaeological treasure. Wisdom persons are valieant defenders of family and community. They may become hardened to life and sentiment turned cold. In these cases, they need much forgiveness for their uncaring errors. Periodically connecting with nature and or visiting sacred sites will bring great stability to wisdom persons.

A GOOD DAY TO:  Sit on a rock.

Cherokee, Owl U’GUKU’ : Symbol is the Owl is Arcturus, the brightest Star in the Constellation Bootes. The Cherokee Bear constellation (Ursa Major) includes the Big Dipper plus four stars in Bootes.  Owl is a hunter, who stands for the wisdom and ability of all great hunters, the cunning of a fox, the tenacity of a bulldog and strength of a bear. Energy for deep thinkers, strong-willed, rigid convictions, bold and authoritive.  Owl is the Mystic Ferryman who guides Earthlings on the return path to the stars holding the torch aloft.
