PANSTARRS Comet: “The current most beautiful object in the Solar System”

COMET PANSTARRS AND THE INTERSTELLAR GAS CLOUD: For a few hours yesterday, dim comet C/2021 S3 (PANSTARRS) became one of the most beautiful objects in the Solar System. It was all about the background.

“I caught Comet PANSTARRS passing in front of emission nebula IC1318a,” says photographer Chris Schur of Payson, Arizona. “This is a 3 hour exposure taken through my 10-inch telescope.”

The velvet red color of IC1318a comes from hydrogen atoms glowing in interstellar space. This magnificent gas cloud is part of a complex of nebulae in the Orion Arm of our galaxy some 5000 light years from Earth. The comet’s transit across it created a marvelous conjunction for astrophotography.

The scene, with variations, may be repeated in the nights ahead as Comet PANSTARRS continues its passage across this complex region of space. Astronomers who want to track it can point their optics here in the constellation Cygnus. For northern observers Comet PANSTARRS is a circumpolar object, about as bright as a 10th magnitude star, so long exposures may be used to reveal the stunning beauty of its background.

AN X-FLARE COULD BE IN THE OFFING: Active sunspot AR3654 has developed an unstable ‘beta-gamma-delta’ magnetic field that harbors energy for powerful X-class solar flares. At the moment, the sunspot is crackling with lesser C- and M-class flares. These may be dissipating the energy required for a larger eruption.

ICE CRYSTALS CREATE A ‘HOLE IN THE SKY’: Last week, Andreas Kohlmann of Samnaun, Switzerland, looked up and saw a 22° sun halo caused by ice crystals floating over the snowy landscape. His iPhone11 photo of the phenomenon captured something sky watchers often overlook–the ‘hole in the sky’ effect.

Galactic Tone 5: Empowerment. At the center of the cube we find Five. Five is an intelligent, organizing force which manages communications and materials, knowledge and application. Fives are natural net workers who gather what is needed. These persons can probe directly to the core of any situation making them excellent investigators.

Star/LAMAT: Star energy is multiplication of all things to abundance. Star has been associated with the fertility of rabbits for its ability to multiply. As each sun in the sky, Star persons shine equally in all directions. This natural tendency of harmony and balance can become compulsion, motivating Star to be too agreeable and too generous, rejected gifts cause fear and resentment. When a Star believes it has been given too much, they are weakened or may even collapse. In this “Black Hole” state, Stars are prone to verbal jousting and arguing to force their point of view on everyone.
