SPACEWEATHER: Double Meteor Showers

Twelve years of Kappa-Cygnids, Taken by Petr Horálek on August 17, 2024 @ Elafonisi, Crete, Greece (Photographer’s Website)

The Perseids, and the Kappa-Cygnids from a Source Unknown

SPACEWEATHER.COM NEWS: 07/27/2025

THE MYSTERIOUS KAPPA-CYGNID METEOR SHOWER: Every August, skywatchers around the world head outside to witness the Perseid meteor shower. But sprinkled among the Perseids is a lesser-known shower: the Kappa-Cygnids. These slow-moving fireballs streak from the constellation Cygnus, and their origin is unknown.

Czech astronomer Petr Horálek has been photographing Kappa-Cygnids for more than a decade, and the photo is every one he has seen.

“Since 2012, I have spent more than 381 hours of 50 nights photographing Kappa-Cygnids,” says Horálek. “This blended timelapse image shows that 12 years is long enough to let the Kappa-Cygnids emerge from the shadow of the more active and famous Perseids.”

Where do they come from? Asteroid 2008 ED69 shares the same orbit as the Kappa-Cygnid debris stream, but there’s a catch: The stream appears to contain more mass than the asteroid itself. This has led to speculation that both may be remnants of a larger parent body that broke apart between 4000 and 1600 BC.

The Kappa-Cygnid shower peaks this year on August 13th. Step outside and look up. For every 10 to 20 Perseids you see, you might catch one Kappa-Cygnid. Enjoy the mystery!

Photographer’s Complete Details:

Every year in mid-August, almost at the same time like the Perseids, another meteor shower peaks: the κ-Cygnid. Named after the star Kappa (κ) in the Swan constellation, from where the slow meteors seemingly appear, they are almost not known as–unlike the Perseids–they have a very low rate of meteors, only about 3 per hour when the shower peaks. Since I have chased κ-Cygnids from 2012, for more than 381 hours of 50 nights, to be exact, I was successful in capturing dozens of them. It allowed me to reveal it as a meteor shower against the 11 August 2021 nightscape scenery of Elafonisi Beach, Crete, Greece. I think nobody captured κ-Cygnids this way before (correct me if I am wrong), cause it required very long-term shooting. Filtered from other meteors, planes, and satellites, this blended timelapse image shows that the 13 years of capturing is long enough to let the κ-Cygnid pop out from the “shadow of fame” of much more active Perseids. The κ-Cygnids have an unknown source, but most likely they are caused by debris of minor planet 2008 ED69. They also have a 7-year cycle of higher activity caused by the influence of gravity from the giant planet Jupiter. Last time such higher activity occured in 2021, when also most of the meteors in the image were captured. Co authors are Josef Kujal and Tomáš Slovinský. Acknowledgement belongs to Mahdi Zamani.

Where do the Perseids originate? (Google)

The Perseid meteor shower originates from debris left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle as it orbits the Sun. While the meteors appear to originate from the constellation Perseus, this is merely the radiant point and not the actual source of the debris. Comet Swift-Tuttle takes roughly 133 years to complete one orbit around the sun, and the Earth passes through its debris stream annually, causing the Perseid meteor shower.

Perseus is known as the Hero Constellation and carries away Medusa’s head (a Hungry Ghost).
In Greek mythology, Perseus carries the severed head of Medusa in a special bag called a kibisis. This bag, given to him by the Hesperides, was designed to safely contain Medusa’s head, preventing anyone from accidentally looking at it and turning to stone. He also receives other magical items to aid him in his quest, including winged sandals, a helmet of invisibility, and a sword.

StarWalk – Kappa Cygnids

The Kappa Cygnids is the summer’s last meteor shower. The stream is visible from the Northern Hemisphere from August 3 to 25, with a peak on August 17. It’s bluish-white, short-tailed meteors can’t compete with the Perseids’ speed. The radiant point is located among the Draco, Lyra, and Cygnus constellations, near the star Kappa Cygnus.

Cygnus, the Swan, extends its wings from the Southern Cross.

The “Tzolk’in Field Guide” is my gift to download that includes the Count of Days with the aspects for each Destiny Kin and highlights for a personal practice with each trecena. It’s designed as a companion for daily practice.

Visit the 13-Day Trecena Guide. to download a free copy. Volume 1 covers the first two seasons of the Tzolk’in, and Volume 2 covers the 3rd and 4th to the end of the Tzolk’in round.

Storm/CAUAC is the 1st trecena of the second season of the Tzolk’in round, found in Volume 1. There’s something more to see when you discern the meaning of Time for yourself. The meaning of time is revealed by the thoughts on your mind.

NOTE: If at any time you get lost in the chaos and forget what you’re doing, Tone 1 reflects the 1st Light of Divine Inspiration as the “legend” of this chapter of Time.

Galactic Tone 3: Action. Three is basic movement and communication, which begins as a vibration. Three energy is very eloquent in all types of self-expression. Communication is how Three establishes a point of agreement between any point “A” and any point “B”. Three persons are rhythmic to the core and are often restless, as motion is their nature. By working closely with the energy of Three, any person becomes more able to predict motions of all kinds.

Crocodile/IMIX: Crocodile receives messages of primal creative force; simply the beginning of all things. Crocodiles who follow their hearts are seen as genius. There is no order to the primal messages, so Crocodile persons should direct their energies toward practical and cooperative efforts to bring productive results. Crocodiles have a strong nurturing energy and will work hard to provide security to family and friends. Being extremely territorial, Crocodiles must watch not to be over protective or too dominating. While in these states, Crocodiles are insecure, indecisive and emotionally volatile.

A GOOD DAY TO: Open to new beginnings.

Cherokee Turtle/ DAK’SI   I’SB: Turtle Island; direction East. The Turtle Constellation Orion, one of three stars in the Cosmic Egg. In Mayan is the Cosmic Hearth. Turtle is the Energy of Creative force at the one-on-one, personal level; dawn, awakening, birth. The beginning of each new era, this star in Orion appears with the rising Sun, heralding the creation of a new World cycle.  Cherokee, IMIX- Totem-Dragon. The energy to understand all things sacred; creation energy, connection for visions, to learn the mysteries of the Universal Knowledge. The dragon carries the source energy of life, revered in ancient cultures for power and wisdom.
