MAYAN CALENDAR DAYKEEPER’S JOURNAL
Our lives offer new understanding through each experience. The lessons may be lost until we willingly show up to learn. We may miss our most important lessons in our desire to avoid our own unpleasant feelings. Unwittingly, we accumulate the baggage we carry. It’s only by personal reflection that we can disarm their influence. The Wisdom/CIB trecena is our perfect classroom for higher learning, and we are called as students to pay attention now.
Tone 3 brings our first day of movement. We are given the intention to take action. Flint/ETZNAB is compared to the perfect reflection from an obsidian mirror. Flint brings the power to see things clearly to wipe the slate clean.
ETZNAB is a Day Sign that brings Light to the Truth. Flint is said to present temptation. It may seem as though we are tempted to act out of character. But, if we pay attention, our shadow is being called to reveal itself. The inner struggle that goes against our own grain is signaling an opportunity to understand ourselves and clear away something with the power to pull us off course.
We can learn a lot from the things we would really like to do that’s out of alignment with our own values. Our desire to do or say things “out of character” is actually a glimpse of the real Truth held deep inside. This is a day suited to working with our shadow. A friend of mine describes his “shadow work” as a process of coaxing our wounded child out from its dark corner a little at a time.
My only real attempt at “running away from home” was a plan born of fear when I was 6 years old. I was home alone after school and cut my finger. The standard treatment then was Mercurochrome – a fluorescent orange topical that combined iodine and mercury. It was a staple in every medicine cabinet in the 50’s.
I think one of my Dad’s strategies was to give a kid something to remember, so a sideways look was enough to keep you in line. These were the days of corporal punishment and though incidents were few, they were memorable. I was recognized as the family spiller. I can still see milk seeping through cracks between dinner table sections while people rushed to clean it up. So, here I am doctoring my wound when the entire contents of the small bottle are spilled on the bathroom counter. (Imagine fluorescent orange grout lining pink ceramic tiles.)
There was no way to clean it up – no resolution – until the bright idea came. Perhaps they would not see it if I locked the door from the inside and closed it behind me. My parents would be home soon, so I took off getting as far as half-way down the block to hide behind a tree.
I remember seeing the car pull up to the driveway. I waited what seemed like an hour before I faced the music, though it was probably only a few minutes. The family was sitting at the dinner table when I got home. Nothing was immediately said. Finally, my Dad asked, “What happened in the bathroom?” I explained the spill. He asked, “Why in the world would you lock the door? (Locks on doorknobs weren’t so easily disarmed back then and the door was never the same, and neither was the counter.) It seemed like a miracle that I didn’t get in more trouble. I don’t remember my answer, though no further attention was given to it. Maybe it was the first time Dad saw the level of my fear of the dreaded “being in trouble.”
This is how our shadow operates. We’re afraid of being in trouble. We run and hide from things we are afraid to experience and in the process, create more difficulty than the original wound. Our wounded child prefers staying lost in the shadows.
CIB’s intent is to get to the heart of the matters that hold us back. On Galactic Tone 3 of Movement we are ready to take action. Like struck flint, Etznab can deliver information that cuts to the bone. Whatever we will learn will be made crystal clear to us, like the reflection in the obsidian mirror.
We may be guided into a journey to our own distant history to see long-held beliefs that still need to go. That childlike nature can serve us when we release the sorrows of our first disappointments. Whatever has held us back, Flint/ETZNAB will reflect in high resolution.
CIB challenges our critical thinking and process – not to judge us, but to help us address what is needed. Flint/Etznab reflects the Truth we need to see. Do not be disheartened or afraid. Remember we are working with the Ancient ones. Their knowledge far exceeds our own understanding. They can see through the illusion and help us wipe our slates clean.
Flint’s energy can build as the day goes on. It’s a day to expect the unexpected from ourselves and others. Drive carefully and pay attention.
To all my relations, as we begin to move forward may we know our footsteps are guided by a higher authority. May we offer ourselves patience and understanding and know that we are Loved. We are able to leave our baggage behind as we have the courage to look at what we are afraid to see in ourselves.

THE TRECENA OF WISDOM/CIB
3 Flint/ETZNAB (Cherokee, Flint/DAWI’SGALA)
Galactic Tone 3: Action. Three is basic movement and communication, which begins as a vibration. Three energy is very eloquent in all types of self-expression. Communication is how Three establishes a point of agreement between any point “A” and any point “B”. Three persons are rhythmic to the core and are often restless, as motion is their nature. By working closely with the energy of Three, any person becomes more able to predict motions of all kinds.
Flint/ETZNAB: Mirror of reality. As a struck flint, these persons are the divine sparks of intelligence. Flint’s innate abilities are utlized to discriminate emotions from fact. Flint persons stand tireless to protect, defend, or cure others by personal sacrifice. By courageously wielding the sword of truth, falsehoods are cut away. Flints, it was said, can receive information on inter-personal troubles or evil plots of others by reflecting in an obsidian mirror. Their valiant service as warriors of the truth must be impeccable or they will experience sufferings of accidens, misunderstandings and gossip.
Cherokee, Flint/DAWI’SGALA: Flint’s symbol is Chawa’ or Castor of the Castor and Pollux Twins in Gemini. Castor appears in the evening personifying darkness. Pollux then appears in the east at dawn to end the night. Totem is a Flint Knife. Flint spirit shone a light like the sun and gave the people the Sacred Venus Calendar, fixed the days and promised to watch over the earthlings. A flint person endeavors to keep that covenant. Opener of the Way, a creator, innovator, stretches the mind to outside limits of capabilities. Changes the static to the dynamic. Brings about change, often through separation and destruction. Beams the Stellar Ray of Truth to Earth as a crystal sword cast down along the path of a lightning flash. The transformer brings things to a head and wipes the slate clean.
NEW DAY KEEPERS: My sacred intention for the new Tzolk’in round is to offer more personal support to those who may want to learn more about ways to draw personal meaning from the calendar. I will be offering an Introductory Guided Course for Day Keepers in the near future. Contact me if this is something you would be interested in! Also, if you’d just like help identifying your Day Sign, I’m more than happy to help. Blessings, in lak’ech Debra (email@example.com)
