Auroras, taken by Pilot Matt Melnyk, Baffin Island, Canada
Signs of the Season
SPACEWEATHER.COM NEWS: 09/22/2025
HAPPY EQUINOX: Today is the northern autumnal equinox. That’s good news for sky watchers because auroras love equinoxes. Around this time of year, the magnetic fields of Earth and sun can link together, setting the stage for geomagnetic storms. Researchers call it the “Russell-McPherron effect,” but you can just think of it as “fall colors.” Happy equinox!
A CIR HIT EARTH YESTERDAY: On Sept. 21st, a co-rotating interaction region (CIR) struck Earth’s magnetic field. The impact did not spark a full-fledged geomagnetic storm, but it did ignite auroras around the Arctic Circle. Pilot Matt Melnyk photographed the display 35,000 feet above Baffin Island.
“What an amazing view!” says Melnick. “We watched the auroras from the cockpit while flying the Dreamliner from Calgary to Paris. Auroras always seem to peak around the Fall equinox, and it sure didn’t disappoint last night.”
Earth s now entering a stream of solar wind following behind the CIR. (This stream is one side of the fast/slow solar wind sandwich that created the CIR in the first place.) Elevated solar wind speeds will probably spark more equinox auroras tonight.
SOLAR ECLIPSE OBSERVED FROM SPACE: This could be a first. On Sept. 21st, NOAA’s CCOR-1 coronagraph onboard GOES-19 observed a solar eclipse from Earth orbit. Watch the lights go out as the Moon zig zags between the satellite and the sun:

To our knowledge, this is the first natural solar eclipse ever observed by a space-based coronagraph. CCOR-1 is the first coronagraph in Earth’s orbit, where such an event could be seen.
Coronagraphs are designed to create artificial eclipses, blocking the glare of the sun so that space weather forecasters can see faint CMEs. That makes yesterday’s event an eclipse of an eclipse.
Regular readers of spaceweather.com may know that the Moon zips through CCOR’s field of view once a month. Usually it crosses in a straight line. We’re not sure why it zig-zagged this time, but it may be related to a yaw flip maneuver scheduled on Sept. 22nd to help calibrate the coronagraph.
Meanwhile on Earth, people in New Zealand saw the eclipse, too, although it was only partial. Browse the solar eclipse gallery for some beautiful shots.

Jewish Calendar: The Last Day of Elul and Beginning of the High Holy Days
As the last month of the Jewish year, Elul is traditionally a time of introspection and stocktaking — a time to review one’s deeds and spiritual progress over the past year and prepare for the upcoming “Days of Awe” of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. This holiday marks the Jewish New Year and is the beginning of the High Holy Days.
Rosh Hashanah begins at sunset on Monday, September 22, and ends at nightfall on Wednesday, September 24.
Yom Kippur begins Wednesday, October 1, 2025, through Thursday, October 2, 2025.
Yom Kippur is known as the Day of Atonement, a solemn day of fasting, prayer and repentance.

We are tying up the loose ends of the old year and embracing the new. The darkness we bring to Light will become the ashes of the past.

CORE DAYS: The 7th Uinal of the Tzolk’in represent the center column of 20-days, which carry the Intention of Balancing. In the Center we are returned to Unity. Our discernment of duality comes into balance. The Maya believed this to be the axis mundi – the center of the world that connects Heaven and Earth, where the four directions meet; where communication from lower realms may ascend to higher ones and blessings from higher realms may descend to the lower realm and disseminated to all. The Core Days may be experienced as a time of personal mystery where the crystalline structure is formed with the wings to fly.
Descriptions by Ian Xel Lungold (12 Sun/AHAU), who’s wisdom and Tzolk’in date calculator is preserved on MayanMajix.com
Galactic Tone 8: Justice. Harmony and balance are the intent of Eights carefully weighs all evidence to reach a balance of justice. Eight is the power of organization demonstrated in the statement ‘as above, so below,’ from simplicity to infinity, the energy of eight organizes all levels of creation, some eights are ‘neat freaks.’
Flint/ETZNAB: Mirror of reality. As a struck flint, these persons are the divine sparks of intelligence. Flint’s innate abilities are utilized to discriminate emotions from fact. Flint persons stand tireless to protect, defend, or cure others by personal sacrifice. By courageously wielding the sword of truth, falsehoods are cut away. Flints, it was said, can receive information on inter-personal troubles or evil plots of others by reflecting in an obsidian mirror. Their valiant service as warriors of the truth must be impeccable or they will experience sufferings of accidents, misunderstandings and gossip.
A GOOD DAY TO: Spend time in reflection and introspection
Cherokee, Flint/DAWI’SGALA: Opener of the Way, a creator, innovator, stretches the mind to outside limits of capabilities. Changes the static to the dynamic. Brings about change, often through separation and destruction. Beams the Stellar Ray of Truth to Earth as a crystal sword cast down along the path of a lightning flash. The transformer brings things to a head and wipes the slate clean.
