Fledge Watch: Luna and Sandy, Big Bear Valley

How can you tell them apart?

The nose, feet, and ankles are the most distinguishing differences, though it requires seeing them together. Adult females are bigger than the males with larger ankles and bigger feet. The nose may be the easiest way to guess. The female’s beak is more stout, while the male’s appears to be more streamlined and narrow.

I found the definitive “guess” in a post from Friends of Big Bear Valley. They mention that a blood test is the only sure way. It’s curious how easy it is to tell the difference in most birds. Mom and Dad can surely tell them apart.

6-23-2026 Impressive Practice

Post from FOBBV two weeks ago:

Sandy and Luna are just over 9 weeks old. (Now 11 weeks in the 10-14 week fledge window.)

Their bone structure and foot pads are fully grown. Their feathers will continue to fill in and grow, their beaks will grow slightly bigger, and they will put on a bit more weight over the next few weeks. We have spent hours of observations and team collaborations comparing everything from overall size, shoulder width, beak and ankle thickness and vocal pitch between Sandy and Luna.

Male and female bald eagles have significant differences in vocal pitch; we have all heard the difference in vocals with Jackie and Shadow. Females are larger than males and so are their voice boxes (Syrinx), which results in deeper lower-pitched vocalizations We used frequency applications to record and analyze Sandy and Luna’s vocals and there were consistent differences in vocal pitch.

The only true way to determine gender for Sandy and Luna would be through blood tests. FOBBV believes that nature should be left to nature, we are here to observe not to be intrusive. We have done our best to make an educated guess on our eaglet’s genders without intruding on their lives.

We believe that Luna is a male and Sandy is a female! Brother and sister living their best lives under the care of their wonderful parents, Jackie and Shadow. A special thank you to the FOBBV teams involved with these tireless observations happening 24/7! The private Facebook group admins and moderators, the detail-oriented recap team and our awesome CamOps team!

Thank you for following along on this wonderous eagle adventure with us!

Maybe they will fledge on their namesake day. 12 Eagle/MEN is only two days away. Reed/BEN is a Day to bless the home and to check in on the neighbors. A door is always open to us where we treat neighbors like family.

Galactic Tone 10: Manifestation. What were once intentions or ideas, hopes or fears become physically present with the energy of Ten. What is focused upon with attention and intention becomes real with Ten. Ten is a powerful energy that carries a great responsibility.

Reed/BEN: Reed persons are the spiritual essence, protectors and guiding light for family and home. They are competent speakers who will take up a cause. Very tough and analytical, Reeds endeavor to bring peace, harmony and order to all o their relations. Reeds are blessed with great skill at negotiations and consoling which are very often put to the test. Although Reeds need a lot of appreciation, may have marriage or business problems because of inflexible vies and high expectations, which erode affinity. The lesson for Reed is to be like a garden hose, not a steel pipe. Bless or repair your house.

A GOOD DAY TO: Bless and repair your house. (And a day to love your neighbors as your self.)

Cherokee, Reed/I’HYA: Symbol-Reed is the Earth, reflection of the Star Chaga of Pollux. Reed made up the Magician Twins who led the journey to bring back to life the daughter of the Sun. The Casket is Gemini.  Energy for Intellectual minds, creation, re-creation, new directions, breaking the ties that bind.  A trailblazer and leader. From the East, direction of success and happiness, no matter what route is taken, always ending up in the Light.
