SPACEWEATHER.COM NEWS: 04/16/2025

GEOMAGNETIC STORMS TODAY: A CME hit Earth’s magnetic field on April 15th (~1730 UTC), sparking 12 hours of G1 (Minor) to G2 (Moderate) geomagnetic storms. The storms are subsiding now, but NOAA forecasters say they could intensify again, especially if another CME arrives. A watch remains in effect for G3 (Strong) geomagnetic storms on April 16th.

THE CME HAS ARRIVED; G2 STORM IN PROGRESS: Arriving hours earlier than expected, a CME struck Earth’s magnetic field on April 15th (~1730 UTC), and a moderately-strong G2-class geomagnetic storm is underway as a result of the impact. It’s too soon to say whether this is just the first of two expected CMEs — or perhaps a cannibal combination. NOAA forecasters say the storm could intensify to category G3 (Strong) on April 16th if another CME arrives.
