SPACEWEATHER: Parhelic Circles, and Storms on the Way

Paraselenic circle (moon halos), Taken by Sheila Wiwchar on December 3, 2025 @ Kaleida, Manitoba,Canada

Light that Comes Full Circle

A paraselenic circle is the lunar equivalent of the parhelic circle, a rare, faint, white ring of light that appears parallel to the horizon, circling the moon and created by sunlight reflecting off vertical ice crystals high in the atmosphere, often appearing with other halos like the 22° halo or circumscribed halo. It’s a spectacular but uncommon halo, signaling very cold, icy conditions in the upper atmosphere. (Source: Spaceweather.com on Facebook, Feb 04, 2018)

LUNAR PARHELIC CIRCLE: This is very rare. On Dec. 3rd, Sheila Wiwchar noticed a gigantic ring of light circling the sky over her home in Kaleida, Manitoba. The full Moon, blazing like a white-hot diamond, sat on one side of the ghostly ring. “I grabbed my camera and rushed outside!” she says.

SPACEWEATHER: Strong Geomagnetic Storm Predicted; Arctic Auroras

Giant Sunspot Complex is Potent, but Quiet

SPACEWEATHER.COM NEWS: 12/08/2025

STRONG GEOMAGNETIC STORM PREDICTED: A coronal mass ejection (CME) is heading straight for Earth. NOAA forecasters say that strong G3-class geomagnetic storms are possible when it arrives on Dec. 9th. The full halo CME was launched on Dec. 6th by an M8-class solar flare from sunspot 4299. If it is as potent as NOAA thinks, it could spark auroras from the Arctic Circle to mid-latitude US states.

G3-Class Storms Generate Spectacular Displays

SPACEWEATHER.COM NEWS: 03/22/2025

AURORAS IN THE USA AND CANADA: Last night (March 21-22), a crack opened in Earth’s magnetic field. Solar wind poured through the gap to fuel a G2-class geomagnetic storm. Tom Naber photographed the light show from Davis, Illinois (above).
