Lyrids 2024: All You Need to Know about the April’s Best Meteor Shower

When to watch in 2024
The optimal viewing window spans from late evening on April 21 to dawn on April 22. According to the International Meteor Organization, the peak is expected on April 22, 2024, at 07:00 Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). Remember to convert this time to your local time zone.

Moon phase in 2024
Unfortunately, this year, the peak occurs only two days before the Full Moon, so the bright moonlight will certainly hide most meteors from the view. Try to block the moonlight with the trees. Read the other viewing tips below.

Where to look (radiant’s location)
The radiant of the Lyrids, the spot where the meteors seem to come from, is situated in the constellation Lyra. It becomes visible before midnight and reaches its highest point in the sky at dawn. The higher the radiant is in the sky, the more meteors you’re likely to see. Use the Sky Tonight app to help you locate it effortlessly.

How many meteors to expect
Under ideal conditions, with no Moon, expect about 18 Lyrid meteors per hour. Occasionally they even burst with up to 100 meteors per hour! But in 2024, bright moonlight will challenge visibility, so you’ll see only the brightest meteors.

View from the Northern Hemisphere
The April Lyrid meteors are visible from many sites north and south of the equator, however, they’re best viewed from the Northern Hemisphere. Start your observations from mid-northern sites after about 22:30 local time.

View from the Southern Hemisphere
From the mid-southern latitudes, the meteors are better visible well after midnight. There, the radiant point rises lower in the sky, so observers will see fewer Lyrid meteors.

How to see the Lyrid meteor shower 2024?
The Lyrids are active from April 14-30 each year, with a peak on April 21-22. During the peak, observers can see about 18 meteors per hour under perfect viewing conditions. Flying at the velocity of 49 kilometers per second, the Lyrid meteors often leave persistent dust trails and can produce bright fireballs.

In Greek mythology, Lyra represents the lyre of Orpheus. Orpheus’s music was said to be so great that even inanimate objects such as rocks could be charmed. Joining Jason and the Argonauts ( in search of the Golden Fleece), his music was able to quell the voices of the dangerous Sirens, who sang tempting songs to the Argonauts. (Source: Wikipedia)

Perhaps we’ll be charmed by the Lyrids away from the sight of the “Devil’s Comet” that fades into the Sun’s light.

SPACEWEATHER.COM NEWS: APRIL 21, 2024

THIS IS THE WORST TIME TO OBSERVE ‘THE DEVIL COMET’: If you get your science news from mainstream media, you might think this weekend is a great time to observe Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks, a.k.a. “The Devil Comet.” In fact, the opposite is true. The comet–barely a naked eye object on the best of nights–is almost completely overwhelmed by a combination of evening twilight and full Moonlight.

To illustrate the problem, Mike Olason photographed the comet sinking into the haze near of Tucson, Arizona, on April 20th:

The 7th Uinal of BalanceCORE DAYS:  The 7th Uinal in the Center of the Tzolk’in is compared to our own axis mundi, the center of our own universe where we are always perfectly positioned at the center of the 4 directions. The axis is the “line around which any body rotates.” Like a spinning gyroscope, we find our balance in a relationship shared between the Above and the Below. Holding a focus within the center of our Self, we reside in the place of perfect balance.

Galactic Tone 9: Patience. The energy of Nine is one of the getting a better perspective of the bigger picture. With the energy of Nine plans or patterns begin to come to completion. Nine requires patience and perseverance that is found in the bigger picture, otherwise there is great suffering from the lack of insight. The completion of cycles of action is all-important to Nine.

Storm/Cauac: Day of the blessing of rain, giver of all life and lightening, a gift of nitrogen to Mother Earth and ozone to Father Sky. Cauac is also associated with the moon and the cycles of the moon, which are the meter of the feminine aspect of creation. The essence of Storm is the feeling of unity, security and warmth experienced in the home while the tempest of trouble rages in the world outside. Perpetually youthful, Storms exist to experience the ecstasy of freedom. They have the great capacity to both learn and teach. Their constant quest for novel experiences often leads to difficult tests and storms of emotion. Looking at these difficulties for the lessons they indeed are, will enrich our lives rather than destroy. Cauac individuals teach much through their electricity of being. Lightning energizes earth, this same energy energizes humans. Divine connections can be accessed.

A GOOD DAY TO: Count your lessons as blessings and your enemies as angels.

Cherokee, Redbird/TOTSU’HWA: Redbird is a feminine sign; the hand that rocks the cradle. The symbol of nurturing, the lightning nurtures and energizes, with energy for zest, curiosity, imagination, and ideas. Lightning adds spiritual force to the human by way of “lightning of the blood” of a healer, directly body to body vibration. The key to spiritual communication and access to the wisdom of the Ancestors lies in the ability to bestir the blood to speak.

The Redbird is a Sign of the Creator’s lightning energy in the sky.
