SPACEWEATHER: Interstellar Object 3I/ATLAS

NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope observed interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS Aug. 6, with its Near-Infrared Spectrograph instrument. Webb is one of NASA’s space telescopes observing this comet, together providing more information about its size, physical properties, and chemical makeup. Webb’s data, and a preprint is available online.

“Unlike nearly any comet in the Solar System”

SPACEWEATHER.COM NEWS: 08/26/2025 UPDATED

IS 3I/ATLAS REALLY A COMET? The most interesting mystery in astronomy right now is the nature of interstellar object 3I/ATLAS. Most astronomers believe it is a comet. However, iconoclast Avi Loeb of Harvard University makes a compelling case that it might not be.

SPACEWEATHER UPDATE: A Phalanx of Sunspots Turning Toward Earth.

A Field of Fire Moving Into Earth’s Strikezone

SPACEWEATHER.COM NEWS: 08/26/2025

EARTH IS ALMOST IN THE STRIKE ZONE: A phalanx of large sunspots is turning toward Earth. Sunspot 4199 is crackling with M-class flares, while big sunspot 4197 has a delta-class magnetic field that harbors energy for even stronger X-flares. Earth is almost in the strike zone of these active regions, and we will be squarely bulls-eyed later this week.

Light Raining Down On Earth

SPACEWEATHER.COM NEWS: 08/25/2025

THE FARSIDE SUNSPOTS HAVE ARRIVED: Last week, sunspot groups on the farside of the sun hurled multiple significant CMEs into space. Here’s an example. They’re not on the farside anymore. Today, the active regions are turning to face Earth:

SPACEWEATHER: Solar Prominences on North Pole of the Sun

Sign of a Coming Pole Shift on the Sun?

The Sun flips its poles of polarity during its Maximum cycle. One of the Signs is prominences on the North or South sides of the Sun.

Breath of Light is Raining Down on Earth’s Southern Pole of Polarity

Radiation Storms Appear to Peak Just After Midnight (10/29/2024)

SPACEWEATHER.COM NEWS: 10/29/2024

PROTONS ARE RAINING DOWN ON EARTH: For the 3rd day in a row, energetic protons are raining down on Earth. It’s an S2-class radiation storm. The protons were accelerated by X-class solar flares on Oct. 24th and 26th. As a result of the storm, a shortwave radio blackout is underway inside the Arctic Circle, and cameras on spacecraft are being fogged. Indeed, most of the speckles in the SOHO coronagraph movie highlighted below are solar protons hitting the camera. This could continue for at least another 24 hours.

SPACEWEATHER: Radiation Storm Underway, G4-Class (Severe) CMEs Forecast 10/10 and 10/11/2024

SPACEWEATHER.COM NEWS: 10/10/2024

PROTONS ARE RAINING DOWN ON EARTH: A strong (S3-class) solar radiation storm is underway today. In plain language, this means protons are raining down on Earth. The energetic particles are being accelerated toward our planet by the incoming CME described below. Passengers and crew onboard international flights over the poles may receive an elevated dose of radiation while this storm is in progress.

SPACEWEATHER: Another last blast, biggest Solar Flare of this cycle

AR3664 – X8.7 Class Flare

SPACEWEATHER.COM NEWS: 05/14/2024 Update

STRONGEST SOLAR FLARE OF THE CURRENT CYCLE: Sunspot AR3664 just unleashed the strongest solar flare of the current solar cycle–an X8.7-category blast from beyond the sun’s western limb. X marks the spot in this image of the flare from NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory.

SPACEWEATHER: Protons Raining Down on Earth

The Wind from Above

SPACEWEATHER.COM NEWS: 05/14/2024

PROTONS ARE RAINING DOWN ON EARTH: Giant sunspot AR3664 is no longer facing Earth. That makes it extra dangerous. Right now, the Carrington-class sunspot is passing over the sun’s western limb–a region of the sun that is magnetically connected to our planet. Indeed, we are feeling the effects of that connection; take a look at this map of ongoing radio blackouts.
